چکیده

This paper presents a unique optical technique that utilizes the reabsorption and emission of two fluorescent dyes to accurately measure film thickness while minimizing errors caused by variations in illumination intensity and surface reflectivity. Combinations of dyes are selected that exhibit a high degree of emission reabsorption and each dye concentration is adjusted to create an optically thick system where emission reabsorption is intrinsic to the fluorescence of the film being measured. Film thickness information as well as excitation and dye response characteristics are all imbedded in the emission intensities of the dyes. Errors normally associated with laser induced fluorescence based film thickness measurements, including those due to optical distortion, variations in surface reflectivity and excitation non-uniformities, are minimized by observing the ratio of the dye emissions. The principle and constitutive equations characterizing emission reabsorption laser induced fluorescence (ERLIF) film thickness measurement are presented. In addition, film thickness measurements from 5 to 400 μm with 1% accuracy are demonstrated.

Excitation nonlinearities in emission reabsorption laser-induced fluorescence techniques.

The effects of the nonlinear behavior of fluorescent intensity with excitation intensity on emission reabsorption laser-induced fluorescence (ERLIF) are investigated. Excitation nonlinearities arise mainly as a consequence of the depletion of the ground-state population stemming from the finite lifetime of molecules in the excited state. These nonlinearities hinder proper suppression of the exc...

Dual Emission Laser Induced Fluorescence Technique (delif) for Oil Film Thickness and Temperature Measurement

This paper presents the development and implementation of a Dual Emission Laser Induced Fluorescence (DELIF) technique for the measurement of film thickness and temperature of tribological flows. The technique is based on a ratiometric principle that allows normalization of the fluorescence emission of one dye against the fluorescence emission of a second dye, eliminating undesirable effects of...

Multimode Emissions from MEH-PPV Blended with Polystyrene Film Waveguides

In the context of conjugated polymers, especially those of the poly (phenylenevinylene) (PPV) family, which are promising candidates as emission material in light emitting devices such as LEDs, field effect transistors and photovoltaic devices, we have, in the present study, prepared MEH-PPV [Poly [2- methoxy-5-(2’-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylen-evinylene] of low molecular weight and low polydisp...

Dual Emission Laser-Induced Fluorescence (DELIF) in Chemical Mechanical Planarization

In this paper, we present a review of the measurements that Dual Emission Laser Induced Fluorescence (DELIF) has allowed us to make over the last 8 years. We have been able to measure many features of the slurry film between the wafer and the pad during polishing while simultaneously measuring the frictional drag. In particular, we measured slurry mean residence time, slurry temperature, and th...

Excited-state absorption in Er:BaYzF8 and Cs3Er2Br9 and comparison with Er:LiYF4

The influence of Excited-State Absorption (ESA) on the green laser transition and the overlap of Ground-State Absorption (GSA) and ESA for 970nm upconversion pumping in erbium is investigated in Er3+: BaY2F8 and Cs3Er2Br9. Results are compared to Er3+: LiYF~. In Er3+: BaY2Fs, a good overlap between GSA and ESA is found at 969 nm in one polarization direction. The emission cross section at 550 n...
